The Spirit of Christmas in Kingsport: Lights, Music, and Tradition

The morning sun filtered warmly through the window as I stirred awake and made my way to the loft, the warmth of coffee in hand, ready to greet the day. I glanced out over Broad Street, expecting the usual murmur of the City waking up, but instead, I was surprised to see a Kingsport city worker high in a bucket truck, his bright yellow reflective vest catching the early light. With a smile, he wrestled with strands of green plastic garland, weaving them from my window across the street to Macado's, adding another thread of holiday cheer to the scene below.

I smiled, too, grabbing the first cup of coffee for the day. I'd been waiting all year for Christmas in Kingsport, which was finally happening above the Blackheart.

Over the past few years, Kingsport has been adding more lights, sights, and sounds to celebrate the arrival of Christmas. It all kicked off just before Thanksgiving, and by the time Santa Claus arrived aboard the Santa Train at Centennial Park on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024, the City was already in full holiday spirit.

Since then, the excitement has only grown. Old Man Winter arrived, too, and with the lights now strung across Broad Street, crowds of people bundled in their winter coats, hands tucked into their pockets, stroll down the festive streets. After a surprisingly warm fall, it felt good to finally make the switch. It didn't take long for the City to sparkle; the lights bejeweled across every corner, bringing the best of what Kingsport has to offer.

Shops stay open longer, their windows glowing with holiday displays, while bell ringers stand outside, adding a musical touch to the crisp air. The Gourmet Popcorn Shop is busy, filling the streets with the sweet scent of caramel and cheese, while the new Philly Steak Restaurant draws in crowds with its sizzling offerings. Christmas events happen every weekend, and the streets hum with excitement—twinkling lights, the sound of bells, and warm laughter as people walk down the streets, their breath visible in the cold air.

Every few days, they add more color to the mix. Bright bulbs light up the area by City Hall, while a six-foot star now shines above Broad and Market. The old Christmas star sits atop the Domtar silos near Cement Hill, glowing brightly, visible from almost every corner of the City.

Local businesses and area sponsors are decorating over a hundred Christmas trees across Glen Bruce Park and Centennial Park for the final preparations. They're aglow with twinkling lights and adorned with unique, creative designs, adding an extra layer of magic to the City. This work by everyone from the City of Kingsport, The Downtown Kingsport Association, local businesses, and volunteers is all in preparation for the official kickoff this weekend, Saturday, December 7th.

As the weekend draws near, they are putting on the final touches to celebrate the official lighting of the Kingsport Christmas Tree at the iconic Church Circle. Santa will be there, along with the Grinch, adding their signature holiday mischief and cheer. The air will be filled with carols, marching bands, and handbell choirs as Kingsport neighbors gather around the tree, bundled up and excited for the moment. Together, they'll sing Silent Night, their voices rising in harmony as the Church Bells ring Joy to the World, marking the start of the season with a warmth that only Kingsport can offer.

But the celebration doesn't end there. Throughout the holiday season, downtown Kingsport will host various events, from the festive parade to twilight rides at the Carousel to the merry glow of Christmas lights that bejeweled every corner. With every weekend filled with something new, there's no shortage of ways to experience the magic of Christmas in Kingsport. Whether you're strolling through the decorated streets, enjoying local shops, or taking in a live performance, such as the comedy shows at 6ix Brewhouse or the weekend holiday parties at The Reserve, there's something for everyone.

This season, more than ever, Kingsport's spirit shines brightly—warm, welcoming, and filled with joy. It's the spirit of a community that comes together to celebrate the Christmas season, in the heart of our town. So make your plans now to join us—experience the magic and become part of the spirit of Kingsport.
